The DDB recently launched a new initiative to make the design center even more student-friendly while encouraging learning and networking with showroom employees and New York designers.

The Student Advisory Board consists of eight students from FIT, NYSID and SVA. They will meet at the DDB twice a month with a showroom administrator and an interior designer who is familiar with the building to discuss their goals and objectives.

FIT student and DDB intern Alyson Kritz will serve as the advisory board’s head chairperson and Stephanie Kaslow, a freshman at NYSID, will be the vice-chairperson. DDB Design Professional Jason Lowe will advise the board.

“Design students are future designers and future clients—fostering those relationships early can only help to broaden the students’ educational experience,” said Jason. “Each advisor will bring something unique to the role; as the director of design services here, I hope to provide additional inroads to help students make those sometimes intimidating first connections with our showrooms.”

“As a design student who has visited the building on class field trips, for assignments, and for various projects, this board is very important to me,” said Alyson. “The impression given when students visit the D&D Building their first time is one of intimidation. The Board wants to encourage and support students as they explore and interact at the D&D so they will continue to explore and interact with it long after they graduate.”

The goals for the board includes making the building more accessible to students; teaching students how showrooms run, business and trade practices, and what is currently trending in the design world; helping students acquire material samples and informational materials; incorporating and encouraging students to attend building events; and helping students network with showrooms, designers and other design professionals.

During the first meeting, which was April 6, the students discussed their ideas with Lapicida Showroom Administrator Anna Serra, who is the board’s showroom advisor. They narrowed down their list to four key projects to focus on:

  1. Perfecting a list of student-friendly showrooms
  2. Creating a “media package” for students to better understand the building and its showrooms
  3. Perfecting a student email list to send out information about events, showroom product news, and general news about the building
  4. Brainstorming ideas for building events such as a sample swap and/or student kick-off event at the beginning of the fall semester

Go Design Go will provide quarterly check-ins on the Student Advisory Board and the progress of its initiatives.

Welcome to 2015 where our Instagram of the Week will now be posted on Fridays! This week two of the 8th floor’s tenants, Jean de Merry and Nancy Corzine, battled for the #1 spot. At time of posting, Jean de Merry was up by one, but you can change that (or make sure they keep their lead) by following the D&D Building on Instagram and liking your favorite!

The Holiday Season is in full swing, so it makes sense that this beautifully set table in the Baccarat showroom with festive red accents would be our most popular post of the week.

Our latest Instagram of the Week was taken last Thursday at the launch of Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz’s new book, Suspending Reality, which was hosted by Donghia in their showroom, suite 700. The dapper designer was dressed for the occasion in a perfectly tailored tuxedo paired with red socks and gold Doc Martens.

You can pick up your own copy of Suspending Reality at Assouline Books & Gifts located in the D&D Building lobby and wherever The Monacelli Press books are sold.
